1. Involve your people in goal setting and planning. To help your people feel that they are vital members of the team. Involve them in developing goals and plans for the work unit. Involve them in addressing these two questions: Where are we going? and How do we plan to get there? The end result should be a team of people who are asserting, ''These are our goals; this is our plan."
2. Involve your people in team problem solving. Whenever a consequential problem that affects the entire group arises, consider involving your people in solving the problem. In a team meeting, you should lay out the problem-solving process and then guide your people through it.
3. Involve your people in team decision making. Just as with problem solving, when an important decision that affects the entire group arises, consider involving your people in the decision. The effective decision (one that is successfully executed) is a function of the quality of the decision times the acceptance by those who must implement it.
